Almost Someplace Familiar

The paintings use direct references to a place as a starting point and slowly move away from the initial reference as they develop. Each painting is comprised of many layers of paint. Edited down and painted over, keeping the essential parts, leaving certain elements visible while covering up others. They exist as a sort of log book of their iterations and nod to the idea of layered memories.

Our memories become imbued with fictional aspects that we believe to be true and these layered ideas come together representing a tapestry of our personal relationship to the past. There are omissions and additions to each time we recall something which becomes represented in the work as layers of paint compound.

These works explore a dedication to the act of painting. Leaning into intuition that references this idea of shifting memory in relation to specific places.
